Surely it’s been months since Montreal has seen the type of party wherein each central element is faultlessly aligned to permit the tender balance of joy & confusion, agony & ecstasy, ease & challenge; the type of party that proves to be wholly irreproducible, never beguiled and never forgotten.
It is a sign of an anxious, distressed post-9/11 culture to see that parties are considered with nothing more than passive involvement or reluctant participation, both displayed in brevity. Apathy and disinterest have claimed dominance, as deep wounds remind us of the ways we are frail. It seems paltry to take risks with the stakes so steep.
But is there no one left who remembers the ways we could party, when it still mattered?
Vincent Charlebois is a 22-year old entrepreneur from LaChute, and he is bringing some contemporary ideas from the rural town along with him to Montreal. Fresh into his new apartment, Charlebois is hoping to host a unique and unfamiliar type of party, a fete to warm his house, as well as celebrate his twenty-third birthday.
“Wigs, poetry and VHS tapes will be some of the elements guests will encounter,” Charlesbois lists as he describes what people can expect from this party. “I also planned different events inside the time and space continuum of the party. This will make the concept of modularity intrinsic to the event itself.”
Already it is clear that Charlebois is planning a unique affair, a party that achieves an exceptional balance of comfort and danger. “There is something memorable in the way we shake hands at my parties,” he promises. “I’d like this party to be remembered for its capacity to… fulfill dreams. I’d like it to be one of those strong psychic experiences that you will try to repeat for the rest of your life without ever really succeeding; one of those great moments of exchange where you feel like being one with the world.”
Essentially, Charlebois is proposing a sensation of advanced awareness, a sentiment all too rare Montreal’s party circuit. What cannot be denied is Charlebois’ diligence and ambition, but will this party live up to all his claims and the plans he’s put in action?
You can trust I’ll be there to find out.
I suggest you don’t miss this one either.
